Cafe Calacas | Santa Ana, CA
Guess who’s back…
Back again…
She Swallows back…
Tell a friend…
I wrote a short post about this place a while back (right hur). I was just raving about their Horchata Ice Latte. Now, I have returned and I came for the food. If you haven’t noticed by now, I am a breakfast kind of gal. Sweet, savory, all of it, I’m here for it.
During my return to Cafe Calacas, I ordered the Churro Waffles. It is advertised as a “Classic Belgium Waffle Turned into a Cinnamon, Sugar, Churro Delight! Topped with fresh Strawberries, Blueberries, and Cajeta”.
My friend got the bacon breakfast burrito (bacon, eggs, hashbrown, cheddar, chipotle aioli) and Horchata Latte. Since I do not fancy the taste of coffee, I ordered the Horchata Latte, hold the espresso.

Fair warning, they were very busy Sunday brunch time and have limited seating. After you order, you get a number and seat yourself. They have picnic style benches outside that are spacious that you can join another party (if they are nice enough to share). We got lucky and the bar top that seats 3 people opened up when we ordered. Cafe Calacas has WiFi so we took advantage of it and brought our laptops. While I was catching up on writing sheswallows posts (hehe) my colleague was working on real adult stuff. WiFi was actually pretty good and held a strong connection until we put our laptops away to eat. Having a narrow bar surface area, we couldn’t fit both our plates and our laptops.
Our horchata lattes were so good, I can not get over it still. You know when you have something for the first time and it’s really good but when you try it again it sucks? Not this. Just as good as the first time, my mouth was in heaven. Refreshing, sweet but not overly sweet, aaaaah. My friend got the hot version and he liked his so much that he downed it before his food even came out. All good things should be enjoyed in moderation. Don’t forget that, kids. His stomach actually really hurt after drinking it so fast and we ended up swapping meals halfway.
I’m not even mad because both meals were very enjoyable, I just enjoyed mine more. With every bite of waffles, there was a perfect balance of buttermilk to cinnamon. No need for extra condiments like syrup. The waffle itself can hold it’s own. I guess I had a bad batch of strawberries at work or something because I didn’t think they were in season. The berries they put on the waffles were sweet and juicy.
Big and meaty, that’s how I like my burritos. It was better than your average breakfast burrito. Nothing super special but it was delicious.
Great blog! Looking forward to your next foodie-adventure!
